Architect, Designer or Decorator?
The interior design industry is unregulated in many states and the various titles used can be confusing for the consumer. There are Interior Designers, Interior Decorators and Architects, but what is the difference?
Architects are licensed and primarily focused on the structural design and layout of the building, whereas the function of both the interior decorator and the interior designer is to make spaces attractive. However, only the interior designer is qualified through education and certification to consult with clients to enhance the function and aesthetic quality of interior spaces. The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) states that, "The professional interior designer functions for the purpose of improving the quality of life of his or her clients."
